Go to your local U-Haul dealer, they double as a Draw Tight dealer. They will install what is legal and appropriate for the car for very reasonable prices. If you need more towing capacity than your brick can handle, get a cheap X-150 pick-up truck for the dirty jobs. Once I got one, I didn't know how I got along without it. Don't get a little jap one though, your brick can probably tow more, we won't even talk about what happens when you try to stop with one of those light-weight wonders.

None. The capacity of a class 3 hitch greatly exceeds the towing capacity of the car.
There are lots of nice 1-1/4" hitches, though.
You could get a junkyard hitch and weld a 2" reciever on it, but why?

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the update. My last 1990 245 DL had it welded on like you said, but the only problem as of now is that it was totaled last september. My current project, '84 245 TI, needs one as well since I need to haul my Vespa motorscooter long distances. The sad thing is that the motorcycle carriers on only fit on class 3 2" receivers. The Vespa only weighs ~300 - 350 lbs. This is way below the max trailer weight.

I would get a trailer using the Class II hitch. 350lbs is way over the recommended tongue weight, so a trailer would put less stress on your car. The manual says "do not exceed 200lbs tongue weight".

I have been using the factory Volvo hitch (2" receiver)on my '82 245 in conjunction with a motorcycle carrier that I have fabricated. The carrier weighs about 50lbs, my Trials bike weighs in at around 170lbs and at these weights the steering does become a bit light, especially with a full tank of gas. In my opinion 300+lbs is too much for this set up. A really small trailer would be a better option.
