the tranny seems toe up. reverse works, forward no. (unless very high rpm and slight down sloap; if i could get it to speed 2nd gear kicked in as normal). 760 gle v6.

got a used aw71 from boneyard $78 w/$10 core. no idea if its any good. it is from a 85 760 v6. appear identical. the 85 has no drainplug and (not sure) no sensor on top of bellhousing like may 89's does (not sure, maybe its at the back of the engine not on bellhousing)

anyway, is there a way of telling whether the one I bought is anygood before i kill myself putting it in? also should i put it in (are they the same) bothe mine and junkyard donor car had 172k on them.

mine had a bad leak out of the rear seal. could refreshing the oil for a month rather than fixing seal, led to it's demise. what are the life expectancies of these things. is my 85 tranny likely on its deathbed too?

For the 85 760 there was no sensor on the flywheel so here is no notch on the bellhousing.I have modified them before by cutting the bellhousing to fit the sensor. Some bellhousings have the outline inside where you are suppossed to cut others you just have to cut.See if the scrap yard guy will trade bellhousings if you aren't comfortable with cutting it.
Unfortuantely you have to put it in to see if its good or not. When you do put it in flush it well through rad cooling lines. If you need any other info e-mail me at butchdalton@yahoo.com

well, in my gravel driveway on some scrap shag carpet friday (65 degrees in denver), i swapped bellhousings between the two aw's, not as easy as it could've been had the designers expected a need for this to be done. there is about a 3 inch sleeve that fits on the inside diameter of the housing and of course pulling it off that sleeve is a bitch. the front shafts and gears and bearings all come out at the same time so meticulously putting back together was necessary. to add to it, the sleeve came off with the bellhousing on one and not on the other. anyway carefull beat the fucker back together. all seems well (rear shaft spins in both directions when actuated).

3 other problems have manifested.
1.i had to switch the kickdown cable too. fairly easy to figure out (when tranny isn't installed). course now its leaking. a friend suggested "silicone, silicone, silicone.)

2.linkage is a tad confusing. i've got forward, forward low, reverse and the sound of my park being stripped. the second shift linkage seems to restrict the movement of the other linkage only. haven't compared it to my 89's original (85s seems to 'fit'); but anyway where is my neutral and the neutral that park would normally lock in? haven't screwed with it to much, left all the length on the linkage where it was so i wouldn't have to adjust.

3.broke off a bolt on the aw's oil pan (directly below the kickdown cable) i pressumed that the leak was from my new gasket being not tight enough, and bolt was tightening in a very believible manner until snap. i guess these are a little to easy to overtighten.

any advice on these bits would be appreciated.

j
