As you've figured out, the original speakers have no value, so free plus shipping is a good price.

For aftermarket, Kenwood makes speakers that aren't too deep and that don't stick out too far. I'm using model KFC-1076 (4") with the hacked up stock speakers as described below. Works great and looks stock w/ factory grilles.

You can buy any in expensive 4" speaker BUT you have to cut the old speaker out of the existing speaker/frame so you can snap the cover back on.
Put the speaker in the door, then the metal frame over it and screw the two to the door.
If you buy High power 4" speakers, they tend to be a little high for the stock cover and some are a little deep so the window may hit. The stock radio doesn't put out much power, any cheapy speaker will be fine.

I fitted 14 cm Kenwoods without any difficulty and they are only £20 a pair. Being blue, they also match the car, which is a billy bonus.
