Girling Caliper Boots 120-130

Hi there,

I am stumped on installing new seals in a pair of Girling Calipers. I have forgotten the trick to the outer boot, it is held in place by the piston. How do you get the piston onto the new boot without tearing the boot? Also does anyone have a spare large boot for a 122 caliper?

Thanks,
Tom

Tom;

I don't understand your concern...I don't recall it being too difficult at all...the last time I rebuilt calipers, I installed the seal, lubed and inserted the piston (until the groove was still a bit above the level of the caliper surface), THEN lubed and pulled the dustboot over and into the piston grove (it is light and pliable to allow this, so this is fairly easy and shouldn't tear it...but if you're worried, drop it into hot water for a moment to maximize its pliability and make sure to lube before starting - I use silicon grease to go along with the silicon fluid), finally, I worked the boot over the lip on the caliper (using paper clip bent with a [deburred] 1/4" hook to help). It is just a bit trickier on the double piston side but essentially the same procedure.

Hope that helps...
Good Luck

Hi Ron,

I got the Red Grease, Lockheed original stickered packet even, and did the install with ease. I was trying to use only brake fluid as the lube and had problems. Also I found a correct boot from the odd lot spares at this supplier for $1.00, what a deal.

Tom
