The Classic Broken Antenna Story 700 1990

Yes, I forgot to turn off the radio and snapped the mast of the power antenna on my 1990 740 Wagon as I went into the garage. Do I need to replace the ENTIRE unit? Or is there a way to just replace the mast? Any guidance would be GREATLY appreciate!

The mast can be replaced separately. Get a new unit from either Volvo or an aftermarket or eBay. The wagon mast is different from the sedan.

eplacement, if all goes well, is a 2-person half hour job.

Remove the nut at the base of the mast, turn on the radio, the old mast must be removed. LOOK at the teeth on the nylon geared part for which way the teeth point, to front or back.

The new mast must be threaded down in as far as possible, with the teeth in the same orientation. Have the brass piece in place, and turn the radio off. It should draw down in. If it doesn't QUICK, TURN ON RADIO. If the nylon thing gets curled, it won't thread all the way down.
Try again until it does draw in.

When the mast is fully in, replace the nut at the base. That's it.

Good Luck,

Bob

If the motor still works, you should be able to get away with replacing the mast only. My antenna won't retract all the way, so I bought the mast and plan to relace mine when it gets warmer.

The masts are available from Volvo and on eBay. I think the wagons use a different mast than the sedans.
