I jacked up my Car the other day to put in the new ballanced drive shaft and I found that my tires only spin one way. If I turn the tires to the left the oppsite tire turns right. I know that this is normal. If I turn that same tire to the right nothing moves.there is no grinding of gears or anything. Has anyone had this same thing happen? Is there a place where I could get a rear differential for really cheap? Thanks for any help.

Starting in the 1991 model year Volvo installed Eaton locking differentials in the 700/900 series. I think your differential is fine.

The differential lock is not fine. A few months ago when I changed the brake pads I was able to spin the tires both directions and get the oppsite directions in return. It was only when I would spin the wheels really hard that There would be the locking action. That doesnt happen anymore. I don't know what is wrong but I am going to have a differential flush maybe that is the problem.

Replace it with a a synthetic lube...amsoil or mobil.

Do you have the automatic locking differential?
That may be normal.( that unit should not let a single wheel go backwards freely, it may see that as a wheel spin from the other side and lock up like a spool for extra traction)
Look in the 700/900 faq's , and the archives , there is quite a bit on those things including a link to the eaton site
