The heater blower motor replacement in a 240 is one of the notorious fixes. The joke is that the 240 was constructed by hanging the motor on the assembly line and putting all the other parts around it.
To replace it you need to take apart the center console to expose the 'central unit' -- what Volvo calls the big plastic housing which contains all the heat and a.c. infrastructure. You then dismantle the ductwork from both sides and remove both fans and remove the motor. Repair places will typically charge $300 and up for labor, and the motor can sell for less than $100 (eBay for ~$50), but mechanics would probably charge $150, I suppose. To do the job yourself isn't terribly hard, it just takes a while. I've done two; the first took me about 8 hours distributed over two days; the second took about 4 hours because I knew what I was doing. There are stories of folks who are real good taking about 2 hours. Bentley has a procedure, and most replacment motors come with instructions included -- if not, ask why not.
In my limited experience, fan motors just don't stop working; they announce their impending demise for many months with increased noise and often burning smells. Did yours just 'stop' -- yesterday it was fine and today it doesn't work? That seems unusual, but as you've said, you've checked the fuse panel. However, if you've never changed it out on your '84, you're due... Sorry.
