The heater blower isn't working. Fuse looks good, fuse connections are good. I'm wondering what the common problems are & how difficult is is to change the blower; or perhaps it's just the switch. Wife had to take the car this morning to work before I could get a voltmeter out. I have an hour commute myself- maybe I should drive without using the heater blower..... I don't think so :-)

I work as an electronics field engineer. This morning the car was iced up. I have too many things to do, leaving little time to operate on my blower motor assy. So as the car was warming up, and the blower fan control set to position 2 and with nothing to lose, I gave the right side a couple of shots & voila: the blower came on. My time spent watching "Happy Days" apparently wasn't wasted.....

I did this a few years ago on my '82. It isn't difficult, it just takes time and care and patience, like anything else worth doing. I would get a new (not used) motor from Volvo, pick a time when you can do without the car for about 2 days, and make sure you have a well-lit and warm place to work. Once you have the old motor out, connect the wores to the new motor and make sure it works before you put the whole thing back together again.
Good Luck
Colin

here is the url for the website that shows the detailed instructions for changing the blower motor. Seems easier just to buy a new volvo whenever the blower motor fails.

Great pics. After looking at the disassembled motor, I'm wondering if the brushes are only worn. At this point, I might just part it out. I'll know later this week after I run it through the NJ inspection. If it passes, it gets another 2 years to live.

The heater blower motor replacement in a 240 is one of the notorious fixes. The joke is that the 240 was constructed by hanging the motor on the assembly line and putting all the other parts around it.

To replace it you need to take apart the center console to expose the 'central unit' -- what Volvo calls the big plastic housing which contains all the heat and a.c. infrastructure. You then dismantle the ductwork from both sides and remove both fans and remove the motor. Repair places will typically charge $300 and up for labor, and the motor can sell for less than $100 (eBay for ~$50), but mechanics would probably charge $150, I suppose. To do the job yourself isn't terribly hard, it just takes a while. I've done two; the first took me about 8 hours distributed over two days; the second took about 4 hours because I knew what I was doing. There are stories of folks who are real good taking about 2 hours. Bentley has a procedure, and most replacment motors come with instructions included -- if not, ask why not.

In my limited experience, fan motors just don't stop working; they announce their impending demise for many months with increased noise and often burning smells. Did yours just 'stop' -- yesterday it was fine and today it doesn't work? That seems unusual, but as you've said, you've checked the fuse panel. However, if you've never changed it out on your '84, you're due... Sorry.

Rob Kuhlman

Concur with Mr Rob Kuhlman, this is not a fun job and the parts from Volvo ain't cheap, and most after market motors don't have the correct mount...good luck, be careful with the clips and the plastic flange they break easily..
