Is it wise to..............? 200

Is it wise to mix different brands of oil?

For example, would it matter if I added "Exxon" brand motor oil on top of "Mobil 1" , "Quaker State" , etc.

Also, what about mixing different weights of oil (ie 10w30, 10w40)

And another question.... Is it wise (or unwise) to mix "gear oil" with already present "automatic Transmission fluid" or vice versa ??

That's just the jist of it. .... Wise or unwise to mix and match different kinds of oil?

Thanks

In the long run, NO! The base oils are all compatible, it's the additive packages that are not complementary and indeed some additives from one manufacturer can interupt the function of another - for example some "thickeners" (aka viscosity enhancers) used in petroleum motors oils can interact together plus with other agents and make the sewage sludge mess mentioned in other posts. Another good argument for synthetic oil, which doesn't need these additive just to pass some rather low hurdle of a standard test.

OK I am a biased Amsoil dealer, but then again, you become biased when you don't even need to look at your flame trap because you know it won't clog with Amsoil!

Oils are like Beer everyone has their favorite brands. So this is my 2 cents.

It is better to mix oil than to go without. But I have seen different types of oils cause sludging. My experiences with oils have been that if you must mix oils of different types the detergents sometimes react. Quaker state is one of the worst oils for these types of reactions. That is one of the main reason I do not like it. (This and the fact that it sludges very bad in Aluminum head engines.)

Personally I like Kendall oil. But Pensoil is easier to find because it is in just about every gas station.

    Good luck and happy bricking.

Oh wait, I mean beer. Amstel light.

But this was about oil, right?

You hit the nail on the head: Better to have oil (clean oil, preferably) than not.

I second the Quaker State sludge machine. It seems to really cake up the junk inside aluminum heads. I never really thought of it that way until you said it, though. But I've had my own experiences with it quite some time ago, and never since.

I've never even tried Kendall oil--it's not very available in stores here. Every once in a while you'll see it, but not often.

My personal favorite is Castrol. That stuff does NOT sludge with good frequency oil change intervals. Also Shell Rotella, if it gets hot enough where you are.

        Chris,

You sound like you have been inside of a few engines too. I like the Castrol too if I cannot find my Kendall that is what I will use. The qualities I like avout Kendall are the detergents. I have had a few older engines with sludge on the valve train and after about a year of running Kendall the sludge is all but gone. I have to hunt a bit for Kendall now usually I find it at Autozone and buy a few extra quarts to keep in the trunk.

        Happy Bricking.

PS My wife would love your Station Wagon.
