A/C compressor clicks on and off 700

We are in the middle of winter in Ohio but for some reason, the a/c compressor kicks on and off occasionally while the engine is running (controls in the car are definitely on heat). This is my first Volvo (1988 740 GLE non-turbo) and none of my other cars exhibit this behavior. Is this normal, maybe to keep the compressor clutch active to prevent freeze-up? Or is this yet another electrical problem to trace? TIA.

In defrost, this is normal. In "heat" (no defrost), it is not normal and points out a possible electrical problem in your heater control unit on the dash.

Because if it is in defrost mode, the comp will kick occasionally to dry out the air headed for the windshield.

No matter what, you should cycle the A/C for a few minutes every month in the winter to circulate oil and keep the seal wet.
