changed belts then... uh oh 700

OK, here's the deal, I changed my timing and accessory belts and now it wont start. I checked it again, took everything apart and put it back together and same deal, no start. When I turn the key, it cranks, but doesnt start. Did I do something wrong? The sproket marks were aligned and everything. Ive done it before a few years back and didnt have a problem.

Also, I found a 1 inch seal, redish in color on my driveway. I dont recall taking that out or seeing it when I did the belts. I was just wondering if it seems like a part thats related to when I changed the timing belt? found around one of the pulley's?

Seal is likely one of the front crank seals.

Your belt is not aligned properly. I guess all that you can do is take it off and try again. Last time I did this I had to fit the belt about 3 times before I got everything "lined up" correctly.

Im pretty sure I had it aligned, the only questionable thing could be the bottom crank pulley as there is no mark to line up. From my manuals and the faq section, it looks like u have to point the keyed section of the pulley towards the tension pulley. When I took off the old belt, when I turned the crank and lined up the cam pulley and bottom right pulley to its alignment marks, the keyed part was pointing a little more towards the lower pulley to the right of it. Where should it be aligned?

I just did the timing belt on my B230f and of course got confused with the crank pulley when trying to find the timing marks. I put the plastic cover and crank pulley back on and then aligned up the mark on the crank pulley to the "0" on the plastic cover. Then I aligned the cam pulley marks and the aux shaft pulley marks and put the belt on. I did notice that the little mark on the outer belt guide thingee lined up with a rib on the aluminum cover that holds the seals. Maybe they are supposed to be the timing marks for the crank pulley. Anyhow, it started right up and ran ok.
Hope this helps.
John

Did you remove the distributor? (1in seal)

Did you remove any timing pulleys?

Check the plug wires and coil wires. Also check the hall sensor connector.

nope. only touched the area around changing the belts and only pully I removed was the crank pulley. Checked the plug wires and coil, etc...

Did you move anything once you brought it TDC? Did you rotate the crank pulley without the belt on?

Does the seal have VOLVO or Erling written on it? Could be the crank seal. But you would notice the oil.

oh ya, about the seal. its 1 inch in diameter. says nothing on it. just a red seal. I dunno even if it came out of my car, but this is the only job ive done on this driveway for a while. Ive looked around and there doesnt seem to be a seal missing or a place for this seal...

I brought it to TDC when I took off the belt. I noticed that when my alignment marks on the cam pully and aux pully were aligned to their marks, the crank pully wasnt in the same position as my haynes manual says. So I moved it to that position. That was yesterday. Toda I tried the advice of the other guy that posted in her. He said to align the crank pully w/ the "0" position on the plastic cover... did that, still not starting. The 2 other pully marks are still aligned. Whats going on?!?!

Is this a post 89 car? Because on the 89, sometimes (in my case) the crank thingy seemed off. I just put the new belt on without thinking about it much. After 89, the timing is set by an rmp sensor that has a reference on a magnet on the fly wheel.

Do remeber the old position? I'll be doing my timing belt soon (89), I'll let you know how it looks.

Mine is a 89 w/ a b230ft. I vaguely remember the old position, but not enough to probably get it right.
