More info on my oil leak 900 1992

I forgot to mention in my previous post regarding my '92 960 oil leak that when I had the oil changed, I wasn't sure if the previous owner had used regular or synthetic oil. My mechanic advised using regular if we couldn't be sure, because switching to synthetic could cause damage at 140K on the engine. Any truth to that? And could the switch have contributed to the leak?

Listen to Steve Ringlee and Napoleon. Toyota Tom knows 960 Volvos and he learned the hard way. Read 700/900 FAQ here at Brickboard. Search archives here at Brickboard for threads and posts from General Patton, Mullah Fuqua and Tom Irwin. Read also threads and posts from Shatz, Jim Bowers, Wbain and Token Ring Man. After you read those, post any questions you have. Hopefully, your car will run beautifully with preventive maintenance. Mistakes with maintenance or repairs can be very expensive with your car. Nonetheless, knowledge of the Volvo 960, maintenance, repairs and suppliers of rebuilds and parts is growing here at Brickboard. Good luck.

Forget this guy, who has no knowledge of this engine. Switch to Mobil 1 5W-30 to avoid stuck-valve syndrome. See the 700/900 FAQ for many details, most of them too gruesome to mention here, about this engine and its foibles. "Toyota Tom" is, shall we add delicately, an ex-960 owner.

Probably not.

If you are anywhere near your log in name, there is a place on Rt1 just south of Freeport that I have been told is pretty good. A friend of mine bought his 960 there.

Not sure about the guy in Arundel/Biddeford, and not sure where you have been going. Avoid Prompto. The people there may or may not know about cars.

If you are nowhere near KPT, fergit the advice. Except the part about Prompto.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I am from where the name implies. You seem to be familiar with the area. The Prompto visit was out of desparation to find someone on Saturday who give it a quick look and hopefully notice something easy to correct. I'll stop by the local garage on Monday, since they also have some Volvo experience. The guy who actually did the work is a Volvo specialist (or claims to be).

Another choice would be Bates and Cunningham, uh, Goodwin's in Topsham. You might ask for Paul, in particular, as he has been around the RWD cars all his life. 1-800-BCVOLVO.
