brake light problem 200

i purchased a 1990 240 dl this weekend and have a problem with the brake/tail lights. the passenger side lights work fine, the drivers side works backwards (ie when the normal lights are on the bright filament of the bulb is on and when the brakes are on the dim filament comes on. the bulb holders are the same as are the bulbs. i took the assemblies out and checked the circuit strip with a meter, all the paths are there and the grounds are good. both of the bulbs are 1156's. the local volvo dealer tells me that there were/are only two styles of bulb holders (white and black). as the flex circuit strips are mirror imaged, (the tail light power for the passenger side is on the inside (toward the middle of the car) and the tail light power for the drivers side is also on the inside and the holders are in the same configuration, what i am seeing make sense (if you change sides, the filaments are reversed). as this can't be what the plan was, does anyone have any ideas?

thanks

brake light problem 200 1990

thanks for the help to those that answered. the problem was that i had two white bulb holders instead of one black and one white (fyi the part number for the black ((drivers side)) is 1372043, the white ((passenger side)) is 1372044), they cost $13.00 US.

thanks again

The white bulb holder goes on the RH side, black on the left. If you haven't got that configuration, do it first and post back if things are still wrong.

Stan-

I had a simular problem on the wifes 87, I assume your 90 works the same. The bulb holders are different, one white and one black. I got mine mixed up side to side. That caused the lights to work in reverse order. It sounds like you might have two holders of the same color.

Check your ground wires I have seen a faulty ground cause all kinds of goofy things.

Good luck happy brickin'
