Glowing red exhaust manifold 700

I have a 740 turbo and the exhaust manifold glows red after driving for more than ten min. or so. Has anyone had this happen to them. What should i check?
Thanks,
Chuck

In addition to all the good adice you've already received, there is one other thing you should do. Have your catalitic converter checked to make sure it is still working. When they die, it causes a back-pressure which results in a red hot manifold.

If it's a really intense glowing after a short period of normal driving, then there may be a problem (lean running, as mentioned below). If you go out and drive the car hard for a while, then it is normal for the exhaust manifold to glow a little. Glowing of this degree is a problem:

Chuck:

TheLostArtOf is correct, this is generally a normal function of the volvo turbo unit, especially the oil cooled model in the earlier models (although they all glow). The joing between the exhaust manifold and the turbo as well as some parts of either element will glow red like Satan himself is your copilot.

If you visit the turbobricks site and do a search you will come across a string where this very subject is discussed.

On the flip side, it is possible to have a faulty knock sensor or some other problem that would cause the car to retard the timing and lead to a lean fuel condition, but I doubt that's your problem. If you think it might be take a hammer and lightly (I do mean lightly) tap the knock sensor bolt (not the sensor itself). If it retards the timing you are running fine, if nothing happens you "may" have a faulty knock sensor. I say may because this isn't really a solid test... you need to get a voltmeter and do a thorough check to know for sure. That's probably why I haven't replaced my knock sensor even though I have a "cherry red turbo"... ;)

Anyway, I don't think you should worry about it.

-Rick

I'd also suggest you check your ignition timing. If it is retarded
it will do that.

This is often caused by a plugged up cat convertor

isn't it also normal for turbo motors when you drive hard or in boost?
the turbine wheel causes a huge restriction in the exhuast so that causes it to slow down @ that spot and heat up the manifold no? friend of mine has straight pipe for an exhuast on his turbo and his always glows ... that and i know his is not running lean because he's never got one ping and his motor come stock running rich (DSM awd turbo Ealge Talon)

i know my 91 740T glows after i drive it hard and i don't think its really any kind of a problem. they are supposed to glow like that. just some colors of glowing=very bad

"isn't it also normal for turbo motors when you drive hard or in boost? "

From the original post
"I have a 740 turbo and the exhaust manifold glows red after driving for more than ten min. or so. "

He doesn't mention hard driving or boost, I usually wait untill my engine warms up before I "drive hard or in boost"
