Hard Steering 200 1991

Hello again everyone! I have a new question to ask.
The other day I noticed that my 91 245 is getting harder to steer when my speed is below about 25 MPh. It seems to dissapear when I go faster than 25. It reminds me of a previous car I had, an 85 245, except the problem was worse in that car than mine is now. I don't think it's related to the power Steering pump/rack because my fluid looks great and engine rpm's have no effect on the problem. I know that most of my suspension bushings need replacing, most are original, if that helps.

Thanks a lot!, Andrew Woods

It's the U-Joint 200 1991

Turned out to be the U-Joint. Thanks for the help!

K.I.S.S. method dictates that you check your tire pressure before doing anything else. 5 PSI too low can result in stiff steering.

Hi Andrew.

From what you've said, it's more than likely that your steering is suffering from stiff u-joints (spray with PB Blaster to loosen them up) or you have a balljoint that's got a torn boot and is seizing up. Or a tie rod end. You should be able to isolate the problem pretty easily. Torn boots on the tie rod ends or balljoints are easy to spot. The universal joints in the steering aren't so easy to tell from the outside, but a good shot with penetrant often loosens up the works. Follow up with white lithium grease or something that will hang around and keep dust and debris out of the way.

Thanks for the reply. I know I've got a ball joint that's going so I'll look into that. Thanks.
