Question about buying 1995 940 turbo wagon 900 1995

Hi, I live in the Chicago area and have recently test driven a 1995 940 turbo wagon. The kelly blue book value for this car was listed as $11,895 but the dealer was only selling for $7480. The added features asre 3rd seat, heated leather, and moonroof. Does this seem too low? Should I be worried? Also the dealer offered a 2 year warranty for the car @ $1500.00.

General questions: How many miles can I expect out of this Volvo ( its already @ 120K)? Is it safe to drive long distances, Chicago to Philly and Chicago to Ark for example? What major reliability issues , if any, are there with this car?

Thanks for answers, T

P.S. Any other info sites like this one?

Question about buying 1995 940 turbo wagon 900 1995

That's a fine car.Actually, I was looking for that year but ended up buying
a good 94.The price seems right but I will still have a COMPETENT VOLVO
guy check it up.I invested $85.00 for a bumper to bumper check w/ a printed
report.Read thru the FAQ section, if you have not done so yet, lots of
good money savings info that could could avail of.I still have Carfax Vin
check untill the 20th of this month so if you want email me the vin #
and I will run a vin check for you..That car is good for at least 200k
and a lot more w/ good maintenance..Good Luck and keep us posted!!

Question about buying 1995 940 turbo wagon 900 1995

"Does this seem too low? Should I be worried?"

Most dealers do not want to handle high mileage cars. So they probably put it close to a wholesale price to see if they could unload it quickly before taking it to an auction house. It will probably make a fine car to own at a small investment, but I would have an independent Volvo mechanic check it out. If they find anything wrong use it as a negotiating tool to get the price lowered further. If you take care of it it will last a lot longer and be more reliable. Check out ebay to see what other similar cars have been selling for.

Question about buying 1995 940 turbo wagon 900 1995

I think that the price is low, but I also find the Kelly prices to be high. If you like the car, have it checked out by a volvo mechanic. Look to see if it has maintenance records--I would consider that a real plus if it did and the records documented good maintenance.

I think that you can expect well over 200,000 miles if well maintained. If in good mechanical condition it is fine to drive long distances.

These cars need maintanence, but in my experience are pretty reliable if kept up. For suggestions on what to look for when buying a used 900 series car, look here: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/BuyingUsed7xx1.shtml#Buying a Used 7xx/9xx The biggest potential problem would be the turbo. They tend to play out between 120 and 150 thousand miles, so make sure you get a mechanic to check it out. It is possible that the dealer knows that the turbo is going out and is charging accordingly.

If you do decide to buy it start your car on a good maintenance program. A good discussion of this is at: http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/HighMileageVehiclePrevMaint1.shtml#High-Mileage Vehicle Preventive Maintenance

Good luck with the purchase. Many on this board consider the 94 or 95 940 turbo to be the ultimate volvo. Let us know how it turns out.

run it on car fax, sounds very very fisy. Don't waste your money on the warrenty. (added features I think are standard)

Otherwise, it's a good car that lasts well into 250K+ with maintance.

As others have said, it's just about the best brick you can buy. But don't rule out the warranty altogether if you can talk them down. repairs or replacement to exhaust, power seat, AC can easily run you the cost of the warranty. OTOH, if you get the car for a good price (which that surely is) just bank something to pay for unexpected repairs. That's what I would do - if it checks out OK, grab it and set aside some money for surprises. And you might consider suspension mods - sway bars, strut and chassis braces, and if it's on the original shocks budget for something there. Then drive it forever.

They only sold about 1500 945 turbos in 1995 so you may have scored. Do Not Smile in front of the dealer until you have the title, however!
