240/740 tranny swapability?

how compatable are the tranny's from 240s and 740s? both overdrive 4 speeds.

Mat, Bram is correct the units will interchange, the cage that holds the shifter can differ by a very little bit and your hand will hit the dash, be sure to change. The only other thing to watch out for is the speedometer cable connection , not htere on 85 up 740 and 86 up 240, so if your car is an early one it may not work. Brian

They are fully compatible mechanically. Possible differences are the length of the shifter carrier (easy to swap over, don't forget the actuator rod under it) and the rear flange (I'm not sure if the 740 ever had the "rubber donut" type front coupling, 240 as far as I'm aware always had the UJ).
