My rattling heat shield has become too annoying to ignore any longer. I've read that folks have not had much luck welding it back in (I don't have a welder anyway).

Can I cut this thing off with a hack saw or is there a better way? Will this affect anything?

You can either take it off or get some tek point(self drilling) screws and stitch the 2 halves back together. Teks work well.

One other exciting possibility. It sounds just like it's heat shield but it's actually an internally rotted-out cat converter. Happened to me.

Here's a side note: When my shield started rattling , it ended up rattling because my motor mounts were shot. I creased and dimpled the shiel so it wouldn't rattle to no avail. Then, while I was fighting with the hose clamp idea, I saw the engine shifted down off the mounts. That became the priority over the buzzing heatshield. I did the Mounts a few days later and the shield noise stopped.

If you don't want to remove it then get a whacking great hoseclip, wrap it around the shield and pipe and do it up good 'n' tight. Cost - about $1.50 for the clip, $0 for the time.

Just take a chisel and break the remaining spot welds along one seam. Pry the damn thing open and pull it off the pipe. Throw it away. I've not had any bad effects in the two years since I pulled that rattling annoyance off my 245DL. Just quiet, rattle-free driving.

Just don't drive off road, or park in tall dry grass.

I tried a variety of things. All worked, but not for long. My favorite was cutting two tiny wedges out of a scrap of hickory I had and tapping them in to the space between the exhaust pipe and the shield. Rattle stopped for about a month before they sort of burned up but for thirty days my car had the nicest country barbeque aroma! I'm thinking of a small piece of eucalyptis next, sort of an aroma therapy approach...........
