Adding a turbocharger to a N/A B230F in an 240 DL possibilities? help? ideas? 200 1986

Hey everyone out there. im wanting to install a turbocharger on my 86 240 DL. I read a faq on it and it seems possible, but would the trouble be worth it? is there anyone out there who has added a turbo to a non turbo car? I dont mind the work, i have modded my car enough so far including cold air intake, flowmaster exaust, electric fan conversion, etc. I want the extra power of the turbo, i have already aquired an intercooler and i'm about to buy some turbo parts. Any ideas or help would be appreciated. i currently have the car running about 140 hp from mods done so far without turbo.

Its not that easy. Look at turbobricks.org and read the article by Philip Bradley. Your engine's compression is higher than a turbos. It will probably cost you less to do an entire engine swap from a 740T, (you'll have to use an engine that is newer than your car according to law) but this might create some spacing difficulties (the distributor in the 740's are cam driven, located at the rear of the engine instead of the front like the 240s). Manifold needs to be changed, fuel mixture, etc, etc. Not to discourage you, but its a SERIOUS job. The wrenchheads around these boards will tell you it isn't, but it is lightyears away from the mods you have done. I don't know your expertise, but if you know how engines work and how to tweek them, then it won't be much of a problem. But, its not a simple "add a turbo and intercooler and go" type of thing. How bout a V8? Or maybe take the loot that you were going to spend on the conversion and buy an entire 240 or 740 T. They can be had, decently running, for pretty cheap these days. You'll just have to do some maintenance on them to get them squared away.

I'd say remove the current engine and install a B230FT from a 7 series turbo. It's simpler than modifying your current motor to accept the turbo.

If you want to keep the current motor but need boost, research adding a supercharger. Think about removing the power steering and the ac compressor and use those drive belts to turn an Eaton. Power will come on very low (unlike turbos) and you won't have to modify the exhaust.

You will still need to think about lowering the compression and adding fuel. Neither of these operations are simple.

Yeah, I'm definitely waiting to see someone with a Supercharged b230f. Damn superchargers are expensive though.

Yeah I know it's not cheap... I started researching it a bit after driving a friend's G60 Corrado. What fun that car was. I decided the right way to do it was to use the FI from a turbo and fiddle around with belt driven off the crank in place of ps and ac pumps. I finally decided screw it and bought the first 745TI with an M46 I found for under $3K. Love this car. 150K and running like a bat out of hell.
