Help..... trying to change timing belt on a 84 240 GL hit a road block cant find where to loosten A/C compressor to remove the belt, felt like just cuttting it off, but summer is almost here A/C would be nice, and I would rather do it right....ALSO bulb failure light is on, all bulbs are working BUT the reverse lights (another post)what do you guys think.

also, that belt can be forced on if you can't get anyone to do it, or you can't do the crank pulley bit. Strange that they hadn't changed it from 79-84. My old GT had this stupid setup, but I figured they would have changed it by 84.

as for the bulbs, I believe that the system uses a matching resistance scheme to detect outs. If one side of the system has different resistance it will make a fault in the system. Volvo suggests changing the bulbs in pairs, as one bulb may have different resistance to the next one, especially an old one and a new one. Seemed to work for me

I`ll try the pulley (shims)first, if no luck i`ll just roll the belt on
and the bulbs i will try ro change them in pairs.

The a/c belt is adjusted by varying the number of shims between the halves of the drive pulley on the front of the crankshaft. More shims makes looser belt. Doesn't your shop manual have some sort of picture of all that?

Re: BF light. The system checks brake lights, front and rear marker lights, and low beam headlights. Start de-bulbing or unhooking them in pairs, see what happens. It may be the BFWS relay itself. Junkyard time. Any 240 1985 or older is right part. Big change in 1986.

Bob, the book I have was borrowed from a friend and it`s a Haynes it just says to loosten bolts on the adjusting brackets the book is very general on the subject.What i`ll do is pull the crank pulley off then roll the belt back on re-assembly
