ATF - question 200

I own a 83 TURBO with AW71, and a 84 N\A with AW70. The 83 calls for type-G fluid, the 84 calls for DEXRON II, I have fluild labeled DEXRON III\MERCON, I know it is acceptable for the 84, but is it O.K. for the 83?

ATF - question 200

If you use petroleum based ATF, you'll need to use what the book calls for in the cars. "Type G" was basically short lived and all "Type F" on the shelf will work. 1983 was a switch over year for Aisin Warner.

But here's my advice: Use Amsoil Universal Synthetic ATF. It meets all the requirements, yes even Type F/G. It is fully compatible with all other ATF's plus you get all the benifits of synthetic ATF, cooler running, less wear, better shifting, much longer change intervals, better MPG, etc.

(yes even Type F, but use ART for those of you with M46's)

ATF - question 200

I have an M47, I replaced the Type F with Amsoil 75W-90(2000 series), shifts like butter above 30 degrees, engine warm up helps alot below 25,it hasn't failed to shift at 17 degress, no grinding ,just feels a little thick til warm.

ATF - question 200

The Series 2000 75W-90 is a pretty good choice for the M47 but not for the M46 in which a gear oil could cause cone clutch slippage....

Just curious, who is your dealer? And did you figure on your own to try the Series 2000? (good deduction)

ATF - question 200

My dealer/ sponsor is Ed Marlow in Samson,AL, I just got a six month costumer package, I chose 75w-90 series 2000 after reading a few posts about m47 owners in southern Cal using gear oil in them, claims of 2-3 times more life out of the m47 than with type F, had been using the 10w-30 amsoil for the crankcase in my chevy, so after purchasing the 245, I went with Amsoil 75w-90 2000 series in both differential and m47. Since I live in GA I deduced that cold shifting problems would be infrequent, if ever.
