center bearing cushion 200 1977

Greetings all-

What is the center bearing cushion and how do I test it to see if it is bad?

Thanks in advance-

Just went thru this with my 1980 wgn.do you have a shuttering/slamming underneath with takeoff? FCP GROTON.COM has rubber bushing.inspect and see if spring is needed.I had a frozen ujoint at back that caused problem. the center bearing may be dry of grease and can be possibly saved, but you won't know w/o looking under car.Don't keep driving as it only gets worse-Ujoints are about $8 each.please follow up or ask more if you need. mark

It doesn't shake when I take off, but I feel a vibration under the passenger side seat (kind of towards the center of the car) when the brick gets to around 3000 rpm. It also makes a humming noise. The noise and vibration stops when I push in the clutch, so I am figuring that it is drive train related. I checked the exhaust system, and everything is tight. Any other ideas of what it could be?

Thanks-

Are you're talking about the drive shaft? If so, the center support bearing is near the center of the shaft. The rubber collar around it keeps the drive shaft from beating the ---- out of the bottom of the car, which can happen since there are three u-joints. Climb under the car and examine the collar or cushion - shake it and try to move the drive shaft around. If the collar is broken, you can see that the portion in contact with the support and the portion in which the bearing is located are detached. If so, new cushion.
