You CAN take an M46 out of an 81 240 DL without taking the engine out!!

Got the new clutch in, and it runs like a champ! I also now have a factory M46 trans manual from Volvo. It was not needed at all. (anyone want to buy it?) The advice from brickboard and the guys at work were all I needed. The worst part was muscling the trans back into place. (and I mean muscle!) I have yet to put the top bell housing bolt in...maybe some day I'll get around to it. Getting it out was fun... getting it can wait! A big Thank You to all who gave tips. Much appreciated.

Feel lucky it went so well. I broke the bleed valve on my slave cylinder (clutch is hydraulically actuated on the 700 m46 cars) and then could not replace it. Had to have a mechanic take a torch to the tranny to pry the damn thing loose. That was after I spent about 4 hours bench pressing the tranny back into place. Man, I'm glad thats over with...

Well Done.

You think an M46 needs muscle? Try heaving an automatic tranmission up in place. The M46 is a featherweight comparitively.

The top bolt requires dropping the back end of the transmission downward and letting the front of the engine pop up, which gives you plenty of room to get that bolt in (only long extensions required... no u-joints needed).

That would have been really good to know before I bolted everything else back together. Thanks for the heads up though! Again, much appreciated.

I wouldn't say featherweight. The O/D adds quite a lot of weight to the equation.

Yea, I don't know the weights of either trans, but I bet this one was about a hundred pounds.

Quick question.. how does the actuating button in the shifter for fifth, come out? I tried getting it out and accidently pulled the wires out of the connector, and can't get them back in while it's still in the shifter knob.
