87' 740 Has Intermittent Fast Idle When Up to Temperature 700

Every tenth time or so when the car is at operating temperature, the idle will be at about 1800 RPM instead of the usual 900 RPM. After it cools off and is started the idle will be back to normal at 900 RPM. It has about 221K miles on it and otherwise runs fine except for an occasional miss. Any ideas what could be causing the fast idle problem? Thanks in advance.

87' 740 Has Intermittent Fast Idle When Up to Temperature 700

Is the electric radiator fan running at the same time when this happens? If so, then the EZ117K ignition control unit is doing its job. It advances the ignition timing when it sees an input from the radiator switch and the throttle position sensor is at the idle (throttle closed) position.
Normally, the LH Jetronic system's idle speed motor compensates for the increased idle speed caused by the advanced timing by reducing the amount of idle air going into the engine. The fact that your idle speed doesn't decrease means that A. base idle speed setting is too high or B. idle speed motor is bad. See 700/900 FAQ for base idle setting instructions.
