installing small clock 200 1982

i recently pulled a large tach out of a junked car, and thanks to brickboard installed it with no problem. At the same time i pulled a small clock out of the same car and can't get it to run right. It seems like the clock only runs when the key is in position I or more. Where do i need to run a wire from so that i always have power to the clock? Would there be a wire running from where the old clock used to be, next to the speedo? thanks a lot -Megan

I had a small clock in my 86 240 that seemed to only run when the car was on and it turned out that the capacitors had gone bad. If you are at all electronicly minded you can fix your clock. I pick this up from a past post made by Jessie.

1. Uncrimp the seal band by prying all the way around it with a small screw driver. Be careful not to stab your hand. You will need to unsolder a connection on the back of the clock and remove the 2 screws. This is the most difficult part of the entire procedure.
2. Locate the 2 capacitors (approx. .5 inches round and .5 inches tall) Mine were gold in color.
3. Unsolder these caps and buy 2 220 micro Fd at 35VDC or Radio shack #272-1029. Solder these new capacitors in remember to watch for polarity.
4. Reassemble clock and just bend down the seal ring in a couple of places for easy access in the future.
5. I tested my clock with a power supply for about a week before replacing it into the car.

If you can repair your clock it will save you about $150 if you go to Volvo.

There is a harness that runs from the tach to the small clock. Did you not get my email of last week that gave full details on this installation? You are currently taking power from an ignition controlled fuse. Good for most gauges but not for the clock. With the correct harness though, you dont have to worry about that at all.
