ABS Light Indicator goes on and off while driving. 89 760T 700

While driving my ABS light indicator goes on and off. It tends to light up when I start the car and when I am deaccelerating. I looked in the manual and all it had to say was that it wouldn't affect the braking of the car. I want to wait a few weeks to take it into the garage (waiting for next paycheck), but I don't want to wait if it could mean not having brakes. I checked my brake fluid level and everything looks good. Is there a common problem that affects the ABS on the B230FT, and is it something that can wait or should be taken care of immediately. Thank you for any help that can be provided.

I had the same problem with a 744T. With the live rear axle the speedometer sensor in the differential is used for the ABS as well. The wires near the sensor get work-hardened over time as the axle moves up and down and one or both wires break causing the ABS light to go on/off. I noticed that the speedometer needle will jump around and if it gets real bad the cruise control will fail as well. Simply use butt-splices and repair the wires! I got this info free from a dealer. Hope this helps.

David -

I am looking at a 1989 760Ti. The ABS light is on constantly. Cruise control didn't seem to work. Do you suppose that the same problem could cause that? I've no experience with ABS, and am wary of buying something that already has a big repair bill needed.

Thanks,

Bob

Most common problems:

Wheel sensors
wheel sensor wires
wire to rear axle

The brakes will work fine with the ABS light lit, but the antilock feature will NOT work if the system is showing a fault.
