The luggage rack on my 1990 740 wagon is loose. I have tried to tighten the bolts but they just turn and don't tighten. It seems like the nuts the bolts fit into are not there any more. Anyone have a fix for this problem? Thanks.

I have a factory roof rack. I just took it off and when I went to put it back on I noticed the 'Well Nuts' in the roof were in very rough shape (actually I also accidentially pushed one through). In any case - a quick call to the volvo dealer got me 8 new nuts at $2.36 CDN a piece. I pulled out the old ones from outside the car (needle nose pliers and the screw helped) and put in teh 8 new ones and voila. A simple easy fix. I highly reccommend this.

For additional information - on my car the well nuts are 1/4 s well nuts. This is a generic size and doesn't even have to come from Volvo although at $20 for teh fix it wasn't worth it for me to shop around.

Good Luck - It was a very easy fix. Even the nut I pushed through I was able to fish out by removing a small piece of trim at the rear door roof liner.

I just had the headliner redone. The headliner guy said he could not get to where the luggage rack screw nuts were located. I do not want to take the headliner out. Is there any other way to fix the loose luggage rack?

I replaced mine from completely outside the car. It is a collapseable grommet. I just used needle nose pliers to pull it out. It was a very simple job. As long as teh screws loosten you shouldn't have a problem. Then just get 8 new 1/4 s well nuts and you are set.

Unless the roof rack is actually coming off I suggest you bag this fix. It is a TOTAL nightmare and requires you to:

1) Pull the roof panels around the headliner
2) pull the car's headliner out or at least down

I can't remember, but I think you may also have to remove the sunroof tray as well... maybe not.

The roof rack is a hastle because it was poorly designed. It didn't come out until after the 700 was originally releasedn due to teh fact that Volvo hadn't designed a rack for it originally and had to come up with a way to work it around the sunroof, which slides back in teh middle of the ceiling.

Basically the rack was an afterthought, and teh bolting scheme isn't very good. Oicne you loosen the bolts for any reason you are more or less screwed unlesss you pull teh car apart to put it back together.
