88 240 running extremely rich - My mechanic can't find the problem 200 1988

"If Ulf from Sweden can't find the problem, no one can." says my parts store, IPD. All sensors test OK, FPR OK, replaced ECU. Replaced AMM. 200K miles. Especially bad when cold. Plugs totally black. Horrible gas mileage. Seems like it's "missing" when cold sometimes, especially on accelleration (sp?). The FAQ suggests checking injectors for leakage; I'll probably try that next unless anyone out there has other advice. Meantime I'm biking it here in rainy Portland,OR.

Make sure your air path is clear. Check you air filter. I discovered after my car started having similar problems, that a plastic garbage bag had somehow gotten into the air filter compartment. Once removed, all the problems went away. Good Luck, hope you find your problem.

So your car is running rich. That means the fuel to air ratio is off. So far you've managed to eliminate that the car is getting too much fuel. How's the air? Is there anything nesting in the air intake system or otherwise blocking off the air flow after the AMM?

The FPR may be good but are you getting the proper vacuum to it? Check the FPR vacuum line and connections. If you have a vacuum guage, connect it to the end of the hose where it connects to the FPR and see if you have vacuum.

sure sounds like a bad fuel pressure regulator to me. how did you test it? And even if it is OK, it doesn't guarantee that there isn't a clog downstream on the way back to the tank. Ulf needs to do a little more troubleshooting...

If I were in Portland, I would go to MVP. Check address, directions and phone number at www.mvpvolvo.com
