Mac Pherson Grommit

Is there a grommet at the bottom of the mac pherson strut? Bentley's says nothing, but Haynes shows a picture of a rubber grommet.

I have some clunking that my mechanic says is due to out of round rear bushing brackets (due to a different inept local mechanic). I recently replaced struts, bushings and sway bar, so it probably is one of those three. Top strut nut is tight. I plan to replace the brackets and retorque everything, including the cross beam. If that's not it, then I'll have to go back into the strut tube, a job I'm not relishing.

The grommet (a metal o-ring) was used at the bottom of the turbo model strut tubes.

Also, if you used KYB struts as replacements, these have journals on the piston shaft which cause a clunk over the most minor of road roughness. Solution is to spin off the top shaft nut (underhood) and slip a couple of thick washers under it. This takes up the gap between the journal and the underside of the strut bearing.

BTW, later on I seveloped another symptom: Brake caliper drag upon backing up with a turn involved, plus a side-to-side clunk when turning.

Tightened up the caliper bolts, cleaned & lubed the brake hardware, and tightened the sway bar brackets.

Hehehehe... ahem.

what is the car, what is the year? 240, I'm assuming, since you mention Bentley.
Where in Haynes does it show that?

Greg

There's a picture in the suspension section. I don't have my manual with me, but I can give you a page number later today.

I think I'll have a bite of cheese 'til then, preferably Wensleydale.
