easy carbon removal... 200

my uncle was just in town, he's an old millwright & a hotrodder. apparently around the start of the 60's/70's holley started selling water injectors that would bolt onto your intake manifold under the carb, the water mist works like an octane booster AND cleans the carbon out. apparently a lot of old tractors & other heavy machinery used to use similar devices.
if you want the easy way to clean the carbon out, remove the bellows below the throttle body, take a spray bottle with 2-3 ounce of water in it, start the engine and crack the throttle open slowly, too much & the engine will die (no airflow sensor to give it more fuel, and just mist a bit of the water in, too much & the engine will die, should leave you with sparkling combustion chambers.

maybe it doesn't really do anything, but my uncles dropping off his old holley mister for me to check out on monday. i thought it was pretty amazing that anyone would put water in their engine on purpose. anyone else know anything about this ? it seemed to work on my car, no more dieseling, of course i'm still going to check the timing & look for vacuum leaks next week.

ps. if you're going to try this, use your common sense, i don't want to hear any whining about how you didn't have a mister/spray bottle so you used the garden hose & hydraulic'd your engine.

I don't think you will be very successful at idle doing this. The engine will die too easily from lack of speed and AMM. This does work, but you need to inject the water while driving at freeway speeds.

That is interesting! I build the same type of water injection system for my old hotrods. But of course most had 11:25 to 1 compression or more.

It is well known that if you can mix a certain amount of water vapor into the air, it will enhance gas mileage.

I had mentioned that water is an excellent carbon remover in a post about 2 weeks ago, but stated that you had to be careful or you would blow the top out of a piston. However, your suggestion of using the spray bottle sounds like it would be just the thing to do it.

Still I would caution people to make sure the engine is fairly cool before trying it. The way it works is the water hits the hot carbon and flashes into steam. The steam gets into the small pits in the carbon and blasts it out. It also rapidly cools the carbon deposits and causes flaking.

I saw a man use water one time and so much carbon came off at once that it blocked several of his exhaust valves open just a little.Of course that motor was really carboned up.

Thanks for the suggestion it sounds good. Also brought back old memories of the old Marvel Mystery Oil injector I modified to inject water under the base of the carb.

Actually we have yapped about that a lot here in the past. I plan on splicing into a vacuum line, adding a bottle of H20 (or maybe some alcohol later) , and a WS washer pump - I will on turn it on the highway at speed. (not under boost with pump on though).

That oughta leave a shit mist behind me!

good luck.....should work but i don't know anyone using it now......some airplane engines had this circa WWII....a friend had a kit on his van in the
late 60's...spliced into a vacuum line...water reservior heated by heater hose..
vapor drawn into the intake manifold...seemed to work.....had to have a cutoff..
before shutting off the engine, so as not to leave any water in engine....j.

that sounds like a slick trick, a secondary windshield washer unit would splice in perfectly ..
good to know my relatives aren't all crazy. thanks =)
