Driveshaft support bearing and bushing 900

Have any of you ever attempted to replace your driveshaft center support bearing and bushing. If so, are any special tools required and how difficult is it to replace. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Julio,

I just finished this procedure. Look at the postings under the title "960 Driveshaft shudder 𖛼]󞩺]" on this board dated March 24. There's lots of information you'll need concerning marking the parts to make sure they go back exactly as they came off (including flange bolts - they're not all the same size!). Also the alignment of the two shafts is critical to prevent shudder. There's even a reference to a TSB on this same topic.

There is a setscrew holding the two shafts together - take this out. Be sure to mark everything, including the overall length of the shaft for reassembly. The bearing itself was a bear to get off the shaft. I took mine to a driveshaft guy who used a hammer and old screwdriver to drive the inner race of the bearing off the shaft. Took him almost an hour to replace the bearing and support.

In my case, I'm not sure I even needed to change the support or bearing. Seems like it may have been just an alignment problem per the TSB.

By the way, www.importpartsspec.com had the bearing and support for a fraction of the dealer cost.

Robert

I have never tried, but the main thing that I saw (watching my mecahnic) ...other than needing to press the bearing out and in was that the shaft needed to be marked where it spilt in two ...to put it back just teh same.

Also there was the time that I thought I needed to replace the center support and bearing (it was hitting the floor under acceleration) ...turned out to be teh rear u-joint. It was almost froze up.

Good luck

Andrew I think you may have just solved my problem. My driveshaft also seems to be hitting the floor. Thanks for the info and I think I'll be inspecting that rear u-joint next chance I get.

If the rubber support is just bad ,when replacing you can extend the life of the bearing by injecting some grease in around the seal with a grease needle or livestock syringe while you have the rubber support off. ( my bearing was to the point of binding when I pulled the shaft to replace the support , but after greasing it up good , it's fine )

Julio:
i've replaced ones on my 3 140's and the 4 240's and it has not been a terribly difficult job. Gey yourself a Bentley Manual (try Ebay). Read the chapters about 5 times. Then do it.
No hay problema.
hasta luego, Genaro.
