does one exist other than the $88 version at volvoworld.com? could some kind person steer me to it if it does? would it be difficult to install for the mechanically challenged?

I found one that fits on the em brake handle. See my Feb 17 post, with a photo, under the 900 series postings. It will also fit on the door handle trim if it's more convenient.

If the center console lid is flat, and you can live with it being black or charcoal color, you could do what I did. Under $20 with armrest option, under $10 without.
