steering problem 700 1989

I hope someone can help me, when i turn the wheel on my car it dosent go back like it is suposed to. For instance if i turn a corner i have to str8 the wheel by actually turning it back rather than it going back by itself. Can someone tell me what the problem is. thanx

after you take the corner does your steering wheel try to turn back but gets "stuck" and you need to turn it back? If you are driving SLOW in a parking lot turn your wheel lock to lock. if your steering wheel turns easy, hard, easy hard, in 1/2 turn patterns then your steering u joint needs replacing. you have to be going slow so the power steering is easy to turn and slow enough so that you can go lock to lock. Mine got stiff and my wheel felt hard to turn and after taking a corner the wheel would try to turn back to it's original position a bit, then "lock up" and I'd have to turn it the rest of the way. I doused the u joint with oil and it's easy again.
hope this helps, Andrew Woods
