Looking to buy a 760 ... are the 6 cyl. really that bad ? 700

There is an '83 760 gle for sale in my area... 240km (144k miles) and in perfect condition. Asking price is 2800.00 CDN (about 1680.00 US) The car has been well maintained.
I hear bad things about the V6 .. are they all bad ? If it has already made it to 144k with no problems .. can the engine still go south at this point ?
Are some better than others or do they all have the "cam" problem ? This car is is in such perfect cond. otherwise and the price is great.
I would appreciate any coments. Thanks

It looks as though you have already received a good deal of advice against purchasing the 6 cyl. engine. Here one more comment from personal experience. My first Volvo was an 1985 760 GLE. It was black on black and absolutely gorgeous! The biggest problem was the head gaskets leaked coolant in the oil constantly, and I ended up replacing them twice. My wife finally made me give it up because we were putting too much money into just keeping it running. I now have a 1990 740 GL and love it! My opinion, the 85 6 cyl. is trouble waiting to happen.

If you can check out the engine and make sure there is good compression and no mingling of fluids, make sure the idle is steady and the water pump/cooling system is in good shape....then rook him down to $1300 or so, I say sweet deal. My 1981 262C had 190K miles on the B28F and it still ran fine.

In this day and age - if you get 60K more miles out of the $1500 car without pouring money into it - then you would be not so bad off. In my area, the Volvos with 4 bangers under $2000 ALWAYS have over 200,000 miles....

You are buying trouble. Look for a 740 with a B 230 engine

See the FAQ for more information. The B28 suffered from premature cam failure due to inadequate top end oiling. The B280 solved that problem, along with some others, and is a fine engine. Unfortunately, a 1983 car probably has the original B28. IF you buy it, try some engine flush (Amsoil and BG make good ones), then install Mobil 1 0W-30 oil for faster startup lubrication at the top end. This will ensure that any cam wear is minimized.

HI: Don't bother, it sounds like a money pit . look at all the post and you will see why. Buy a much more dependable and easy to work on 740 sedan or wagon with the B230f non-turbo you'll be better off. Dan.
