Well, my 89' brick has finally found a need for new rubber. I have the original 14'' wheels on it, so i was wondering what kind of options there are for sizes and brands. How big can you get under those Volvo wheel-wells with 14 inch rims?

Speedometers depend on tire OD.
Tire OD depends on combination of width, profile, and wheel dia.
175/70-14 = 23.65" OD.
(175[mm]/25.4[mm/in.])x(2x0.7)+14" = 23.65"OD

I've also been using 215/60-14 on my '81 with no problems and their the same OD as original. For performance get at an 'H' rated tire. Much better stopping power in the wet and no squealing in corners compared to the cheep 'S' rated.

A nice size for the stock wheel which is recommended in Paul Grimshaw's performance book is a 195/65-14. Personally I've used 195/70 and 205/70. The
195/70 worked OK but was a little tall. The 205/70 were horrible because they really were too tall and killed the acceleration and the sidewalls allowed alot
of flex which hurt the handling. Maybe a 205/65 would also work well. The other
problem is a lack of performance tires in those sizes. Going up to a 15 inch or
even 16 will give you a much wider range of choices.

On my '88 245, I fit 205/70-14 tires with no problem. This was on the 14x5.5" alloy rims, and 205 is as wide as is recommended for that rim width. Without getting into serious mods, 215 is the widest that will fit without rubbing.

For my '92 245, I found a nice set of 15x6 inch alloys from a 760, and run 205/60-15's. I am partial to Yokohama Avid T4's.

i have 185/60/14 on the stock 5.5x14 rims on my 240. have Dunlop D60 A2`s on it right now but when it is time to change i will probably go to Yoko`s Avids
