960 wagon vs 240 wagon Does the 960 have a better ride. Condsidering purchasing a 97 960 with 83k is this a good choice?

Good choice. I own two and have been best Volvos I have had. Great ride, lots of power and quiter than front wheel drive units. Send me an email and I can give much more info. Serviced Volvos for 14 years.

If you're interested in the 960, do a search for "Tom Irwin" and "General Patton." Also, read some of the archived threads on the 900 board. These cars (960s) can be very problematic.

Given a choice between the 960 and the 240, I would choose the latter. It is not as sophisticated as the 960 is, but it is a tank and with proper care and maintenance will last a very long time. It is also a much simpler car to wrench on, is more DIY friendly, and the parts aren't so expensive as to induce a heart attack (if you steer clear of the dealer, that is).

The late model (91-93) 240s have driver airbag, ABS, and a few other goodies. '93s have R134a A/C and an updated version of the B230F that has oil-cooled pistons.

I would recommend the 960 over the 240. From what I understand, 240s are simpler and easier to work on. The 960s are complex and come with lot of electronic stuff. The 960s also have more safety features like airbags, side impact airbags and ABS. Not all 240s have these.

I have a 1997 960 sedan (same as S90) and is the best car I have owned and driven. If you want to buy the car, be prepared to learn as much as you can about the car and don't ignore even the minor problems. These (960, S/V90) cars need regular maintenance. Make sure the timing belt was changed at 70K. If not, get it done right away. Use of synthetics (engine oil, ATF) is highly recommended and use only Volvo coolant. Don't let the engine or transmission overheat. If you are not the DIY type, then find a knowledgeable (with 960) and reliable Volvo independent shop.

Read the brickboard regularly to see what other 960 owners/experts say or do.

GOOD LUCK !

Yes, the 960 has a better ride.

Some people will tell you to positively not buy any 960.

My take is that while you will not have an engine that is as durable as the 4 cylinder it remains an exceptional car. Just make sure to have it checked thoroughly before purchase by a Volvo specialist and maintain it well.

Good luck!
