Where do you live? USA 1983 beasts had electronic ignition.

Ah ha! 200 1983

Volvoworld.com lists dwell angle and point gap for the B21A ('76-'85) under "Tune-Up Specifications." So he must have a Canadian Bacon car with the B21 carb engine.

Chris,

Like Geroge, I'm confused here. As far as I know, every 240 that left the factory has an electronic ignition. In fact, a popular upgrade on the earlier 120/1800/140 models is to install the ignition system from a '75 240 in lieu of the stock points and condenser setup.

Is your '83 a U.S. model, or do you have a Canadian car with the B21A?

I've been doing some research and as it turns out the Canadian Models such as mine assembled in Nova Scotia with the 2.1 Motor had Points. Our emissions have not been as strict as yours for many years now I guess they put points in figuring it would be cheaper to manufacture for the canadian market that year.

Anyways, the electronic ignition I'm going to use is from a 89 240 GL. It looks like is should go right in. I'll keep you posted.

Chris

I believe my daughter's 1980 240 has electronic ignition.
To the best of my knowledge the electronic ignition started in
1975 with both the 240 and the 164.
I guess the question is, why doesn't yours have it?

In any case an earlier model stock system should be easily adaptible,
I'd think.

Pertronics is one source. 200 1983

I did a points elimination on a chevy distributor years ago...it used a reluctor pickup on the original points plate and used the original point cam on the distributor. There are other kits available that use an optoelectronic (shutter wheel or reluctor wheel) setup...they're all pretty good.

Sparkplug replacement went from 3K to 12K or annually although unleaded gas might have played a part (1973 car in 1975....).

I would avoid a capacitive discharge system for the street unless you get a multistrike system...and it would probably cost more than the street value of your car.....

Must be a Canadian Brick 200 1983

I have an '83 242 with the B21A carb engine and my brother has a '79 244 with B21A. Both are cnadian cars with point ignition. My brother swapped in a Volvo electonic from a 1980 Canadian B21E car and I have a Crane Hi-6 in mine.

There are a number of ways to convert points to electronic. I installed a Crane Hi-6 unit on my '83 242. The installation was very easy and the points stay in the distributor so you can have a backup system by putting detachable couplings on the condensor wire and that's about it. The Hi-6 is quite expensive and there are less expensive models as well by Crane, Mallory and other speed merchants. There are other types which attach to the distributor shaft but from what i have heard they are not very reliable but thats only whatI heard. I think that a factory setup would work also from a newer model 240.
