Problems with '96 960 sedan 900

Hello--

I'm new to this forum. My wife owns a 1996 960 sedan with about 105K miles. She recently had some extensive emissions work done on the car by a shop that purports to specialize in Volvos. Approximately one week later (and quite suddenly), her car began spewing gray exhaust in significant quantities and running very roughly. She took it back to the shop and they now tell her that she has major fuel injection problems. I'm not very mechanically inclined, but the news that she now has major fuel injection problems less than a week after having significant emissions work done seems a tad coincidental. Does anyone here know if emissions work on a 960 would entail messing with (note the highly technical terms!) the fuel injection system? Is anyone else suspicious given these circumstances? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated. I also apologize in advance for my limited knowledge/expertise and my undoubtedly inadequate descriptions of the service that was performed on her car.

Check the level of antifreeze, just make shure is not leakink inside the engine and been burned by the heat of the exust. One thing with this engine I've read is the gasket on the intake manifold, dont know how mechanicaly inclined you are but if you spray carburator cleaner around that gasket and the engine accelerates then thats the problem.

The intake manifold gasket just causes a mis-fire at idle speeds, not any smoke! BTDT.

Thanks for the replies. I will get some more information from the wife and check back here in a few. Appreciate the "welcomes" and thanks again for the input.

You need to take it back and find out just what is going on. It's only been a week, so they need to look at it. What extensive emission work was done? What does the repair order say? Does the check engine light come on? They need to read any codes and report them to you. All the codes are published.

Tom had lots of bad luck with his car, I haven't with mine. It's still going strong at 103K miles. When was the timing belt changed, 70K I presume?

Welcome.

New to the board? Welcome. Forgive me as I am in a hurry.

The short vers.

1995 960, bought at 104k mi, owned 2.5 years, I have Volvo dealership Tech experience-did all work myself. Spent $11,000 in WHOLESALE parts in that time.

I dumped the car in January after it's THIRD catasrophic engine failure. I now drive a Toyota.

#1 Yes. The shop could have messed something up.

#2 Hold onto your britches because it is more than likely a nasty coincidence, with the possible mitigator that they could have accelerated a problem that was already waiting to go.

We need to know more.

Is it throwing any codes? If so, what are they?

If the EFI is acting up THAT BAD, (and it can), it will certainly throw a code.

Write back with more data.

Oh, did I say 'welcome'?

gotta run.

I AM NOT A TRAITOR!!! I AM A FREEDOM FIGHTER!!! 900

Besides, my wife has a 940 that just crossed 100k. I is asking for donations, too much. I can handle that, plus a Toyota. But maintain a 960 and a 940????????????????????

I would rather suck the snot from a dead mans nose.

Thank you very much.

That is an act of unspeakable depravity. Maybe you are a Peugeot owner waiting to be born.

'unspeakable depravity'??? 900

Just purchasing a car designed by the folks who produced Pearl Harbor (the real one) and built by folks who look like the extras from "Deliverance"?

Nothing much wrong with a 960 that a 5.0 Ford won't fix.

I'll shut up now.

Don't push it, Buck. There is more to life than cars. Look at Ralph Nader. He doesn't even own a car, and ain't he doin' good?
