How do I test my temp guage? 700

This may be stupid, but what is a good way to test my temparature system?
My gauge starts fine and as the engine warms up is goes to the middle (where it should be). This would all be fine and dandy, except this is where it was sitting when the car overheated.

I assume its the sender in the radiator, but how can I tell?
Could it be the gauge?

Thanks

The sender is on the driver's side of the engine block. Remove the lead and ground it. Your temperature gauge should register at the top (as in overheated). If it doesn't I would suspect the gauge; if it does I would change the sender.
