Tires for a older turbo wanna be sportswagon 200

Hello,
Want to buy some fresh rubber for the GLT turbo wagon. Want to go with 215/50/15's on the virgo wheels. Any suggestions for a good summer sticky tire that has a strong sidewall but won't blow thru like a Pirelli? Kumho's? Bridgestones? Dunlops? I drive like a maniac.

My mechanic just got some Khumo 215/55-15 tires for his screaming-brick...
(He can run up to 20 pounds of boost w/ his water injected turbo ;-)
However he has rally coils front and rear, and said that if he were lowered they will never fit... (They didn't fit on his lowered Bertone)
He said next time he'd try some 205/55-15 for the Bertone

I tried a 195/60 Avid this time arounf, but I happen to like a 205/60 Avid T4 better.... next year.

Hi David,

I just put a set of Bridgestone Potenza RE950 on my '86 and they seem quite good. They have had a lot of excellent reviews on tirerack.com, which has them at about $80 or so. They are quite "sticky" so I know I need to upgrade the bushings, shocks, sway bars, and struts next!

Let us know what you decide to go with... Good Luck!

Regards,

David,

You may encounter some clearence problems if you go wider than 205. That's as wide as anything I've run and from what I can see there's not much room left between the rubber and stuff to rub on with that width. I like the Yokohoma Avid H4 for good performance at reasonable cost. My $.02

225s would fit with proper offset if the tire isn't too tall. 215/50/15 will fit fine since they're shorter than the stock size.

I'd be interested to hear about how that size fits once you get the tires on the car. It should work OK with a stiff sidewall. I ran 205/55/15 Bridgestone RE71 (140AA), and they looked like they were all the 15x6 Turbo wheel could handle safely for width. The RE71's didn't last very long, so I'm about to mount a set of 205/50 Kumho 712's. I don't expect the same level of grip as before, but they shouldn't be too bad. I wish I had waited so I could have bought a set of 205/50 Falken Azenis Sport, but it's too late for me. Some tires I like just from reviews and specs alone are:

Kumho MX
Dunlop FM901
Falken Azenis Sport
Bridgestone Potenza RE730
