My '81 240 DL serves me well... Recently I have come across an old 240 GL wagon with a slightly disassembled engine. I am uncertain of the year of the later but it has the same headlights as mine. The wagon has a 6cl diesel in it with an automatic tranny. Who can tell me if I can transplant the fine running engine(4cl) and tranny(standard) from mine into the wagon? I love this board and will continue to post for information. Many thanks to those of assistance. Drive it like you stole it!!!

If you plan to go through with the swap, get some Volvo Service manuals, especially the Wiring Diagrams Manual (WDM). They are a bit pricey, but nothing compares. http://www.volvotechinfo.com/index.asp. This would be in addition to a Haynes and/or a Bentley.

You might also cehck with the power that be about emissions testing. You would have a hybrid car, and that could cause a problem.

Yep. I've seen it done several times. It's a good upgrade from the VW 6-cylinder diesel engine.

Use all the parts from your '81, such as motor and tranny mounts, exhaust pipes, and so on. Don't forget to clean the diesel fuel from the tank. And keep in mind that you'll need to use the gas fuel pump.

The one item the might need some attention is the driveshaft -- I don't know if the tranny companion flange is the same from diesel automatic to your standard tranny.

BTW -- the vehicle year should be on the white decal on the top of the left fender, inner, under the hood.
