Steering Wheel Removal With Airbag 700 1992

I have a rough squeeking noise coming from behind my steering wheel. In previous cars this has always been the result of dirty horn contacts. How can I remove the steering wheel that is equiped with an airbag?

Thanks,

Bill

Here is the procedure for the 240, as far as I can tell, the 740 airbag wheel is the same setup.

first remove the negative battery cable and wait a minute. Now the airbag will be safe to work with.

You will need a torx screwdriver, size T30, and remove 2 screws from the back of the steering wheel. If you turn the wheel you will be able to access them. Now the pad will come off. Carefully pull the pad off, and the disconnect the airbag wire from the pad.

Now use a deep 27mm or 1 1/16 socket to remove the center nut. The steering wheel will pull off.

Greg

ps, originally I thought you were talking about a 240, not a 740. I don't know if the 740 has a 27mm center nut.

The procedure is the same for 240 or 740 but 740 uses a bolt, 17mm. You also need to LOCK the contact reel before removeing the wheel. There is a hole in the wheel that the airbag wire comes through. Inside this hole is a small round hole in the plastic housing of the contact reel. You need to center the wheel and insert a screw into this hole. It prevents the airbag contact reel from unwinding when the wheel is removed. You will probably find a tellow warning label attached to the airbag wiring, with the other end attached to a screw on the wheel under and to the left of the bolt. This screw is provided to lock the contact reel. When reinstalling the airbag, snug both screws and torque the RIGHT side first.
