Where can I get the connectors (rather than use the ones from my dead harness as they've began to get brittle too) to build my own harness?

If you are referring to the round rubber things that go into the connector on the firewall, those are also used in the 2-wire connector to a pre-1986 front parking light, and maybe other protected places. Salvage yard.

That's what I did when the dealer told me the price on them. Ticked me off, and I maybe lost time and energy on it. But, they worked fine.

You can buy them directly from your dealer's parts department. Get the parts fiche from Volvo Technical Literature and order what you need by part number.
