On my 87 760 B280E I still haven't adjusted idle speed as yet, however I have read all I can on it in Haynes which covers it well. First you have to disable the idle control valve by connecting a red and white wire to the battery negative, this wire & connector is found on the RH inner fender, on mine it is just to the side of the battery. You now use the black screw on the TB to adjust idle speed to spec, not quite sure what that is but somewhere around 700 or 750. Also, not sure if you need a hand held revcounter for this and if so how this is connected. You then disconnect the red and white wire, and idle speed should rise and remain steady.
If required, you now continue the tuning by either one of two methods to ensure the CO emissions, i.e. air/fuel mixture is right by adjusting the concealed screw on the AMM (Air mass meter). For North American models, the mixture can be verified by using a special volvo probe (some brickboarders may tell you how to make your own) which is connected to a green & white (think that is the colours)connecter in the vicinity of the AMM. The blinking light of the probe will tell you when the mixture is right, think it should blink on/off at equal intervals. If you don't have the probe facility, you need a CO meter for feedback when adjusting the AMM and make sure the emission is as per spec., Haynes has the method & correct figures. I think the idle speed and mixture should probably be checked adjusted as often as every 6000 miles or every 6 months, but not entirely sure on that. If I am right, then we should all probably do this check and tuning if required much more often than we are (at least for some of us).
I am not an expert on this I must confess, but I am getting ready to do this tuning myself soon. Other more seasoned brickboarders will no doubt correct me or offer simpler or better advice.
