rumbling noise while hwy driving - any ideas what it is? 200 1983

Hi all,

If I am driving between 45-70 MPH, I hear a low rumbling noise that increases in pitch as my speed increases. (i.e. 45 MPH = low rumble, 65 MPH = higher pitched rumble). I can't tell if it is definitely coming from the wheels, but it doesn't sound like the engine at all.

Also, the steering wheel vibrates slightly in tandem with the above-mentioned symptom (but doesn't vibrate if i drive less than 45).

any ideas what this could be?

as always, thanks for any ideas on this.

susan.

Hello,
I would try and have the wheels balanced its cheap and should be done anyway. Check the FAQ for driveline problems as well, maybe you need a driveline support bushing. The 700/900 FAQ details procedures for eliminating various problems to narrow your options. Good luck. Oh yeah, just a note- the 700/900 FAQ is generally very applicable to the 200 series.

Might be a front wheel bearing starting to wear out. See if a passenger can locate the sound. Bad wheel bearings make a "rrrrrrr" sound whose pitch is speed-proportionate.

I'm having the SAME problem with my 81 240 Dl wagon. Not the engine, but comming from the rear. I had what seems to be a similar problem on my truck. Turned out it was the pinion gear. Took apart the third member and cranked (and I mean cranked) down with a 3/4" impact gun. Took about 10 minutes with two guys.. I of course was holding the yolk in the vise (owch). So that solved the problem. The symptom was that the pinion wasn't engaging the ring in the right grove, so it hummed. I'm wondering if it's the same problem on the volvo.

SO.. now that I've stated that I have the same problem as this lady...anybody know what it is?!
