Greetings from Cleveland: J, I had exactly the same problem (and I mean exactly) with my '87 to the point where it would quit, slowing down at traffic lites, when I would slow down to make a turn ( a real pain 'cause the power steering quits...but you found that out, I'm sure), or even when I had to slow down for traffic on the highway. I'm betting that your car starts right up again, with just a hit on the key. I thought the same thing about the transmission...that the torque converter wasn't releasing and 'dragged' the engine down to a stall. The thought of a new trans was not appealing. That wasn't it at all! Let me inquire....have you had any work done on the engine, most specifically, replacement of the Mass Airflow Sensor (or AMM as the company likes to call it)? I did and the knucklehead who did the work replaced my 007 AMM with an 002 (or 016, I forget now) which was the one used prior to 1984. Found the correct 007 through the brickboard (thanks, Mr. Cavenaugh) replaced it, and the problem was absolutely solved. I would think that if you haven't had the AMM replaced, then the one you have is prob'ly on its way out. You might want to look for another....boneyard ones are usually OK, and you shouldn't have to pay too much more than about $50 for a good one. Hope it helps...I'm betting that this is the problem.
