Oil Consumption 200

hi,
Just recently i have been noticing that i have been loosing a lot of oil about (1/2 a liter every 600km) and blamed it on an oil leak on my rear seal. About a week ago i went back home to Toronto and had the leak fixed from an old family volvo mechanic. BTW i have an 86 240 with 480,000km on her.
The problem is that my car is still loosing about 1/2 liter every week and half or about 1200km (mainly highway driving...though the beltway can be a killer). I did have a compression test done about 2 years ago and she passed with flying colours and i have not noticed any loss in power and the car still runs great. I am just wondering what could be wrong with her and if there is anything i can do/check(easily??) to solve this problem or should i just live with this problem (i guess this would be one one way of keeping my oil clean). I do plan on driving her for quite a while longer...she is just reaching mid life.

thanks for your help

My guess is that your rear main seal was, in fact, leaking, but that the majority of your oil loss was (and is) from the plug in the back of the head. (This is where the distributor is located on 700 series cars.)

IPD sells a metal bracket to keep it from "popping" out.

It would help if we had an idea of what you see of a leak somewhere, or blue exhaust smoke, or other indication of where the oil is going.

One thing to check is the PCV system. Run the "Jiggle" test. Post back with what you find.

Good Luck,

Bob
