Clutch question - 82 GLT 200 1982

I have a question concerning Volvo clutches I hope you can enlighten me on. I haven't dealt with clutches/stanard transmissions all that much. My son's 82 GLT M46/od has unknown miles on it as the odometer was broken when I acquired it. We have put 25,000 miles on it since rehabbing the head and turbo. I don't get to drive it very often since I turned it over to him (about a year ago). Today I had that opportunity and I immediately noticed that the clutch was engaging much earlier than I remember. The pedal is only about an 1" off of the floor before the engagement begins. This seems way to early to me and was wondering if this is a symptom of normal wear and need of adjustment or is it a symptom of the clutch cable pulling through its attachment point (that I have read about here on the Brickboard)?

My work space is currently tied up and I couldn't get it in there tonight to investigate so I thought I would ask you about it and be forearmed before I get under it to see what is what.

It would seem that if I lengthen the clutch cable (via adjustment) that would compensate for normal clutch wear. It doesn't seem like that would address the problem of the clutch engaging with the pedal barely off of the floor. Does it sound like I am just talking about a simple adjustment of the clutch here or does it sound like a different problem? Thanks for any enlightenment.

My 1979 245 had a similar problem. I adjusted the cable length, only ot find the next day the problem had returned. Several days of that and there was no more cable left with which to adjust. In fact, the thing quit disengaging altogether.

As you know, there are way to drive a car in that condition, and with a tach it's a lot easier. Teach your son how, just in case.

The problem was the disengagement arm. That's the one with a pivot on the RH end, the cable on the LH end, and the throwout bearing in the middle. The arm had lost it's temper, or something, and was bending a little every time the I stepped on the clutch pedal.

That was a this is a job I out-sourced, since I do not have a clear garage. Needless to say, while you're in there, do everything. Rear main seal, pilot bearing, flywheel and clutch pressure plate re-finishing, new clutch disc, all of it.
