b230ft backfire & poor power curve 700 1989

I've Missed something. Replaced the intake manifold gasket & reinstalled manifold+ re-installed previously removed distributor; static timed to spec and started engine.
So, engine runs ok but backfires on deceleration and tops out @ about 65mph on the freeway (struggling).
Went thru the faq and not sure where to go from here as I found no intake leaks and timing is correct.
What'm I missing please

One (somewhat unlikely) possibility is that the cam has shifted timing. Your symptoms sound much like what happened on my '83 244 non-turbo when I replced the t-belt but was off one tooth. In a 740, of course, missing a tooth at the cam will affect both the cam and the ignition timing.

If the timing marks all align, then it's possible that the pin between the sprocket and cam has sheared.

As I said, this is possible but not common. Chase this one when all else fails. Take my comment as food for thought instead of a call to action.

Check all of your intercooler hoses for leaks.

"distributor off" in my original post refers to other work done by the owner. Wanted to be sure what I'm missing wasn't related to the running problem. I did reinstall and static time engine to get it running
