Why Can't I Figure This Out Myself? AC Belt Tension 200

I have a 83 244 with a loose AC Belt I can't seem to figure out how to loosen the compressor to adjust the tension. Where are the adjustment bolts located? I thought I was a pretty good shade tree mechanic until this. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the advice, I also saw an older message after I posted this one that spoke of the soft metal on the bolt heads. This was helpful. I used a good 6 point socket and was able to easily remove the front pulley half and take out a couple of shims. I put the belt back over the pulley and then re-installed the pulley bolts rotating the shaft as I tightened the bolts a little at a time. It worked well and wasn't too terrible of a job. Although an adjusting bracket on the AC compressor would be an easier way. I removed the fan and shroud and this helped with better access and in keeping the socket aligned so as not to round off the bolt heads. This forum is a great resource. This is my 4th Volvo but it has been a few years since I owned one. Wish this had been available when i had the others. Thanks again.

Yeah, what he said. Basically you pull the front part of the pulley off (four bolts and two nuts on mine), pull out a few shims and reassemble. Then you pry the belt back on (it's a bitch to do, I still haven't gotten around to putting mine back on).

Its a bit strange. The adjustment is made with the amount of spacers in the pully that is on the crank pully. The crank pully seperates in to two halves, and there is two or three spacers between them, the more spacers the looser the belt. Fewer spacers, the belts is tighter. When putting the pully back on, there is a series of 5 or 6 small bolts that you tighten, tighten each one a little at a time.
