how to set air/fuel mixture & timing ? (k-jet) 200

i've got an old k-jet, replace'd the seal on the air knob on the throttle body, capped off the egr system, now the idle seems to high (typically 1500rpm), now i can thread in the air knob to drop the rpms, but i suspect this is just making it run richer, now i could adjust he timeing as well, but what's the correct method to get the timing/idle/fuel mixture set ? i know the fuel mixture was adjusted a while back to richen it a bit after leaning it out to pass air care on the fuel distributer. & no, my ssytem doesn't have lambda sond or whatever the oxygen sensor system was called.
thanks guys =)

There is what looks like a valve cap on the airflow meter (the big alloy box connected to the intake manifold with the large rubber bellow).

You remove the little cap and insert a long allan key (size 4, 5 or 6, check haynes). by turning the allan key you increase or reduce the backpressure on the airflap inside, thus changing the mixure. You need a CO meter to check correct setting. Basically you are best of having that done in a workship.

Timing is adjusted by moving the distributer housing with a strobe light on the crankshaft pully, just like in the old days with the breaker type. There are no fancy feed back loops or knock sensors to worry about. As it is breakerless it only needs adjusting once.

All is fairly basic, trick is to find a mechanic that still has the old tuning skills and doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

A quick comment - do the adjustment with the Oxygen sensor disconnected. Also, there is a way to get a rough approximation using a dwell meter, but as Jorn said, you need a CO meter.

        Jim,
How do you set it with the dwell, I don't have CO meter and would like to see if mine is close.
        Thanks.

          Chuck,

Do you have lambda (an oxygen sensor)? The original question in this post refers to a K-jet without lambda. If you do, I can find the procedure for the dwell meter-- I guess it just measures stoic crossings like the LED tool.

As for setting CO without lambda or a tester, I just used the 3mm wrench, backed it out on lean side for rpm drop, turned it in a bit at a time to locate the peak rpm and set it just to the rich side of the peak. That's what I did. Turns out I shoulda set it on the lean side, because I just sneaked under the limit on the emissions test today for CO, and they don't measure NOx on a '79 here. I got the tailpipe test, but the 85 244 in front of me had to do the treadmill.
